How to Remove Pet Stains from your Rug

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Any pet owner knows that pets have a tendency to soil rugs and carpets. Once this happens, the big question is if and how to remove pet urine and other messes before the rug is ruined.

How to Remove Pet Stains from your Rug

It is important with any pet stains to clean them before they have a chance to soak in. When removing pet urine from a rug, it becomes difficult to get the stain out once it has absorbed into the fibers and starts to yellow. It is equally as important to make sure that you remove all of the odor from the urine, or else the dog will be drawn to the same area in the future.

Your best bet at successfully cleaning a pet stain at home is if the stain is still wet when you find it. The first step is to soak up as much of the urine as possible. One method of doing this is layering paper towels, and then newspaper, both above and below the rug, and then standing on top of this for a minute, and then removing them. This will help remove excess liquid. Once this is done we suggest using a solution that is made from 1 cup of warm water, ½ cup of white vinegar, and teaspoon of a mild dish washing detergent. This solution will help neutralize the uric acid crystals in the pet urine, so the stain does not yellow. It will also help eliminate odor. Test the solution on a small out-of-the-way area of the rug, and then work from the outer edge of the stain towards the center. Once this is done soak the liquid up with a towel. This same solution works if your animal defecates or vomits on the rug. In the situation where the urine has managed to soak down to the padding, it is necessary to purchase new padding to replace it in order to completely eliminating the odor.

Do not use a steam cleaner when dealing with urine spots on your rug under any circumstances. The heat will set in the stain and the smell. Instead of helping, this will actually make your rug more likely to be ruined. In our experience, carpet cleaning solutions like Resolve are also both ineffective and damaging to handmade rugs.

If the stain has dried and yellowed already when you find it, it is necessary to call a reputable rug cleaning service, like the one offered at Peykar Rugs on Long Island. Professional rug cleaners can remove all of the odors and stains deep down in the carpet, especially ones that you cannot remove yourself. At Peykar, we offer a Pet Urine Removal Service. This is a three part process that consists of a restoration cleaning, to remove any yellowed discoloration, a color restoration service, and then a guaranteed odor removal process.

Preventing Snow and Salt Stains on your Rug

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Winter weather can take its toll on your home.  Treading mud, slush or road salt into your house can turn into a nightmare, soiling your rugs and carpets.  Road salt may not be noticeable at first, but over time it gradually builds up and creates a stain that is already deep into your rug.

It can be helpful for you to have a door mat outside of the door to help people remove any dirt or snow from their shoes prior to entering the house.  This will help you to only have minimal dirt and slush is tracked into your house and onto your rug.   Also, vacuuming both the front and back of the rug regularly can help prevent major salt staining.  This should be done at a time where the rug is dry, because it is more likely to pick up any salt that is in the rug.

If you are already at a point where your rug is really dirty or has a bad stain, we suggest that you have it professionally cleaned.  Especially for a valuable or heavily soiled rug, cleaning it yourself may end up hurting the rug more than the weather already has.  Professional services, like the one offered at Peykar Rugs on Long Island, are safe and thorough. We can determine what kind of materials and dyes were used to make your rug in order to find the best method of cleaning for your rug.
